Memorandum of understanding and cooperation’ between the Conference of European Rabbis and the US Commission for the Preservation of American Heritage Abroad.

On November 21st, during the gathering of the Conference of European Rabbis in Monaco the "Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation" was signed between the Conference of European Rabbis and the US Commission for the Preservation of American Heritage Abroad. The agreement discusses the support and cooperation of organizations in regards to the exchange of information on monuments, cemeteries, burial places and synagogues in Eastern and Central Europe, as well as the preservation of historical monuments, mass Holocaust victim graves, and repressions.

The agreement was signed by the president of CER – Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt and the Chairman of the US Commission for the Preservation of American Heritage Abroad – Paul Packer.

"To date, Europe has over 11,000 Jewish cemeteries. Many of them are in places where there are no longer active Jewish communities, therefore, the cemeteries are lacking in supervision and care. We wish to preserve these memories, therefore it is important for the authorities to adopt the law on the preservation of these cemeteries. However, there is a tendency to simply build them. "The signed memorandum is not just an agreement on cooperation, but an exchange of information and mutual support aimed at preserving the memory of the victims of Nazism", – Rabbi Goldschmidt comments on the agreement.
